Brad Mills – Brad Mills has arguably been the ace of the staff in the beginning of the young season. Mills, who has had two small cups of coffee at the major league level has been dominant for the 51′s. His 4-5 record doesn’t suggest success, but Mills has impressed with improved control and command. Mills has increased his BB/9 (walks per nine innings) from 3.4 to 1.8 and has also improved his WHIP (walks plus hits allowed per inning) from 1.433 last year to 1.119 this year. What is even more impressive is his HR/9 (homeruns per nine innings) has decreased from 1.2 to 0.5. He has only started twelve games, and it is entirely possible that his stats will become worse, but it is also fully possible that he can keep up this rate for a season. With injuries and a bullpen (especially the 7-8-9 arms) that has been struggling, the Blue Jays should give Mills another look. He is only twenty-six years old, so it is fully possible that he can bloom into an arm that can make an impact now, but the forseeable future.
Brett Lawrie – Lawrie, is probably the most obvious choice out of any of the 51′s to get called up. He has the potential to become a franchise cornerstone almost immediately. Through fifty-two games, Lawrie has shown considerable power and in an improved plate discipline. He has hit fifteen homeruns in fifty two games, considering he only hit thirty-four in his first two hundred and fifty two games. His OBP (percentage that he reaches base) is a Jose Bautista-esque .415. He has played a respectable third base and he has continued to show his impressive speed. It also helps that Blue Jays fans need to see dividends for the traded Shaun Marcum. It also helps that Edwin Encarnacion is currently embarrassing himself playing third, and not bringing the power that usually keeps him in the line-up. Lawrie, despite going on the 7 day DL recently, will recover and be in the big leagues very soon.
