WWE Rumble Preview & Predictions

29 Jan

By Jacob Tozer

The time has finally come. World Wrestling Entertainment kicks off its 2012 pay-per-view schedule with the highly anticipated Royal Rumble. The card for tonight features only four matches, but all appear to be worth the money spent to watch. We are treated to two world title matches, a grudge match, and the Rumble itself.

World Heavyweight Championship Match (Steel Cage): (c) Daniel Bryan vs. Big Show vs. Mark Henry

In what is the first steel cage match to ever grace the Royal Rumble, we see our defending champion Daniel Bryan face two monsters in Big Show and Mark Henry. The odds seem stacked against Bryan because of the sheer size difference, but from watching wrestling for so long, I know different. It makes logical sense for Bryan to keep the title, simple as that. He is a young champion with excellent in-ring ability, and I feel WWE will have him as champion going into WrestleMania. Big Show is just too old to be considered a credible champion, and with Mark Henry supposedly being injured during this Friday’s taping of Smackdown, it makes sense to leave the belt on Bryan.

Prediction: Daniel Bryan retains World Heavyweight Championship via escaping the cage

WWE Championship Match: (c) CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler w/ John Laurinaitis as special guest referee

Here we have another typical title match in which the champion has everything going against him, but somehow manages to pull out the miraculous victory. CM Punk has been in a heated feud with Interim Raw GM John Laurinaitis for several months now, and it comes down to this match. Laurinaitis has openly stated he is going to screw Punk out of the title, but I see it differently. WWE has a habit of making things a tad too obvious, and I believe there is no exception here. Laurinaitis will probably be knocked out at some point during the match, allowing Punk to hit the GTS on Ziggler and retain the title, thus allowing Ziggler entry into the Rumble, but more on that later.

Prediction: CM Punk retains WWE Championship via pinfall

John Cena vs. Kane

This is the most anticipated singles match on the card due to one looming reason: A possible John Cena heel turn. Cena has been the biggest face in the company since 2005, literally carrying WWE on his shoulders. Last year Cena reportedly made WWE $106 Million on his own, and those figures are what makes me question the turn. For the past month Kane has been torturing Cena, telling him to “embrace the hate” that the WWE fans have thrust upon him. Recent actions suggest that Cena may indeed turn heel, but I think WWE is just trolling the viewers. With kids 10 and under buying so much Cena merchandise and making their parents pay outrageous ticket prices to see “Super Cena” make another comeback, I can’t see Vince McMahon letting Cena turn his back on the kids that allow him to live the life he does. With all of that being said, I feel Cena will continue to show heel tendencies and bring an edge to his character, and tonight he goes over that edge. He will take a beating for a while, and then snap. He will go crazy and beat the living snot out of Kane, using illegal weapons to aid him. Cena will “embrace the hate” but I don’t feel it will lead to a full-fledged heel turn.

Prediction: Kane defeats John Cena via disqualification

Royal Rumble

This match is one of the most coveted matches that the WWE offers every year. 30 superstars will enter the ring, and the only way to be eliminated is to be thrown over the top rope and have both feet hit the ground. This is the hardest of all matches the WWE offers because of the sheer number of entrants, but I have my mind set on who I think will win the right to face a world champion in the main event at WrestleMania. Firstly I think we will see the return of a couple surprise entrants in Goldust, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, and Road Dogg. Now then, ever since Chris Jericho returned to Raw early in the New Year, I knew WWE had something special planned for him. He has hardly spoken a word since his return, nor has he competed. His statement on Raw this past week about how at the Royal Rumble it would be the “end of the world as we know it” tells me that he is going to win the Rumble. Now, I could be wrong because WWE has been also known to fool us with making something painstakingly obvious, only to make a last minute change and throw us a curveball. With that being said I feel Jericho enters as number 30 and makes the final four along with Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Wade Barrett. Jericho will then eliminate Randy Orton in the final two to secure his first ever Royal Rumble Victory.

Prediction: Chris Jericho wins the Royal Rumble

There you have it folks, this is how I feel the Rumble with unfold tonight. It will be interesting to see just how WWE allows it to play out. Stick around to see just how close my predictions were in my next article.  Thanks for Reading.

Why Jose Bautista Is The AL MVP

29 Aug

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated recently wrote an article claiming that Curtis Granderson is the AL MVP listing him first. He ranked Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista fifth in his rankings. In today’s post I will write my argument why Jose Bautista deserves the AL MVP trophy.

Argument number one: The Numbers - Jose Bautista does a lot of things correctly. While Granderson leads Bautista in home runs, runs and RBIs, those numbers are somewhat manipulated by the fact that Bautista has missed nine games. Bautsita would certainly be leading if he had participated in the same amount of games. He also has only five less hits, which is another number that could change because of the nine game gap. Bautista is +35 in walks and has struck out 49 times less than Granderson. His OBP is .76 points higher, and Granderson’s OBP is already very impressive. Bautista’s OPS is over .100 points higher, and his slugging percentage is also .45 points more than Granderson’s.

Argument number two: Lineup Protection - Jose Bautista has a good lead-off hitter in front of him in Yunel Escobar but other than that, the lineup’s don’t compare. Put Bautista in the three spot with Gardner and Jeter hitting in front of him, and than see how many times he would score with Tex, A-Rod, Cano and Martin hitting behind him. The Blue Jays are building their lineup, but right now it doesn’t compare.  The fact that Bautista’s OBP is so high would mean that his runs would certainly be higher/more than Granderson if it wasn’t for weak lineup protection.

Argument number three: Versatility - The adversity that Bautista had in a very inconsistent was intensified when Bautista had to shift to third base because of Edwin Encarnacion’s struggles. Bautista has played gold-glove worthy defense at two positions. Granderson is a good outfielder but he is starting to show age. Bautista has a bullet arm and a case could be made for a gold-glove in right-field if he qualifies by season end.

Curtis Granderson is having one hell of a year, and I am not trying to take anything away from him but Jose Bautista has absolutely shined this year for the Blue Jays after questions of doubt. He has provided an extremely young and c hanging Blue Jays team with tons of leadership and has absolutely mashed the ball. I believe that he should win the AL MVP.

Blue Jays trade Aaron Hill, McDonald To Diamondbacks For Kelly Johnson

23 Aug

The Toronto Blue Jays have traded second baseman Aaron Hill and shortstop John McDonald to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for second baseman Kelly Johnson. This was first reported by 620 KTAR sports broadcaster John Gambadoro. More details to come.

4:11 update: Alex Anthopoulos is expected to announce the move at a press conference scheduled at 4:30 Atlantic time today.

4:22 update: Johnson, Hill (if his options declined) and Johnny Mac are all scheduled to hit free agency after the year. Its quite possible that the Blue Jays resign Johnson, and even MacDonald after the season is over.

4:24 update: It is also possible that the Blue Jays will receive a compensatory pick if they can’t sign Johnson after the season is over.

4:40 update: AA quotes “I have not ruled out either player being back here in 2012.” “Hill: I can’t thank everybody enough for everything … It’s been a blast. I’m very open to coming back next year”

4:46 update: AA says that he had discussions with McDonald about a trade if the Jays were out of contention. Likely he will resign at end of the year.

Why Jesse Litsch Works As A Reliever

17 Aug

Jesse Litsch is a fan favorite in for the Toronto Blue Jays. Whether its because his bright red-hair/beard, his big belly or because of his love for the game; no matter what happens with Litsch, fan’s always seem to support him.

When Litsch was called back up from the minors after struggling in the rotation, people thought he would automatically fit in the rotation after Carlos Villanueva got hurt or after Brad Mills started to struggle. In this blog I will explain why Litsch belongs in the bullpen, not as a member of the rotation.

First of all we look at the small sample size for the big pitcher:

After a promising first two seasons, Litsch has struggled in the rotation. His starts since the 09 season haven’t been impressive. In 19 starts after 09, Litsch’s ERA is 5.56 and his record is an uninspiring 5 wins and 9 losses. However, there has been hope since he starting pitching in the bullpen.

In six appearances since joining the bullpen, Litsch has been impressive. His overall numbers are well-rounded. His ERA sits at 1.76 and his K/9 sits at 12.3. It also doesn’t hurt that Litisch has a 0.588 WHIP.

While I know it is a small sample size but it is somewhat promising. With Luis Perez as the Blue Jays only long reliever right now, Litsch’s success is extremely important for the Blue Jays.
